Now i’ve got you in the undertow. / Why you wanna blame me for your troubles?
Ah ah ah you better learn your lesson yourself.
Nobody ever has to find out what’s in my mind tonight.
Suddenly I felt uncomfortable – like I had overheard the sinister, whispered confessions of three unapologetic, facetiously guilty young girls. Should I tell someone, or try to forget what I heard? LA-based Warpaint has no intentions of letting you un-hear what they’ve conjured.
Emily Kokal, Theresa Wayman, and Jenny Lee Lindberg take hold of you with their luscious, haunting harmonies and flowing waves of shimmering guitar, and delicately let their secrets breathe into your ear without holding back. The minor chords and low-fi production, fused with the bleeding lyrics and distorted, clanging percussion reverberate deep into your bones. Each song leads you down a dimly lit maze of dripping tunnels - each turn leading back to that soul-sinking feeling of knowing your end is coming, and at the hands of these three seductive sirens.
Since the arrival of their EP Exquisite Corpse (produced by John Frusciante) in 2008, you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who would consider Warpaint a flash in the pan. Aptly-named The Fool (2010), their first full length solidified the raw, predatory talent of the group. Just like these ladies don’t shy away from baring their teeth - they certainly don’t fuck around when it comes to showing off their technical skill. Constantly shifting time signatures, atypical chord progressions with systematically detuned guitars and sweet melodic lines floating over this darkly painted landscape all bring to light the seriousness of this group. So, take them seriously and don’t cross them…you don’t know what they might have waiting for you in the shadows around the bend…
And so we sink so far down / And we can’t go back now
…Can’t go back now
